Endangered African penguins given a second chance

The Waterfront Boat Company regularly assists The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) with the release of rehabilitated African Penguins and other seabirds along our coast. Mondays are release days and after an inspection by a registered vet, the penguins are transported to the V&A Waterfront and carefully loaded onto the Condor. The African Penguins are then released as close to Robben Island as possible with the aim of integrating them with the resident colony.

CEO's Message

World Tourism Day will take place on 27 September 2010, in South Africa not only do we recognise the day but we dedicate the entire month of September to raising awareness on the importance of tourism to the economy of the country. The worldwide theme this year is Tourism and Biodiversity, this theme provides an opportunity to bring attention and understanding of the importance of biodiversity in sustainable tourism.

Did you know that South Africa has the third-highest level of biodiversity in the world? According to the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), we are the proud custodians of over 19,500 indigenous plants and approximately 60,000 species of animals. For us in the tourism industry, these biodiversity assets are not taken for granted as they are the primary allure of South Africa as a destination.

Sadly these natural resources are under constant threat, by way of example, Rhino poaching is approaching epidemic levels, just this year alone, 188 animals have been lost to poaching - not a small number considering that there are only 23 000 Rhinos left in the world.

Read about TTG’s involvement in conservation in the story of our subsidiary Waterfront Boat Company’s admirable work with the release of rehabilitated African Penguins. We are also honoured to be part of a tripartite relationship with SANParks and Concor at Cape Point. During the week of 13-17 September, SANParks will be offering free access to all National Parks including Cape Point; get more information about this offer in our specials section.

"The powerful forces that shape the essence of tourism, including the human urge to see and experience the natural world, must continue to be harnessed to support the achievement of the goals of the Convention."

Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary, Convention on Biological Diversity (2007)

On a final note, let us remember that the onus is on each of us to protect and celebrate our biodiversity, so this month I urge you all to take the time to find ways that you can contribute on a sustainable basis to the conservation of this national asset; this could be through volunteering, financial contribution to the various conservation bodies or raising community awareness; the more of us who pledge to make a difference, the higher the chances of us winning the battle against the erosion of our biodiversity and thereby ensuring that tourism in South Africa remains sustainable.

Best regards,
Monwabisi Fandeso

Editor's Note

Spring has sprung giving us a much needed reprieve from what has been a bone chilling winter. This is the time for us to embrace the outdoors exploring all that South Africa has to offer. With September being Tourism month, we need to become tourists within our own country and explore the many fabulous destinations in this country that has often been referred to as ‘a world in one country’.

With the theme of biodiversity for this tourism month, spend the day at the picturesque Cape Point, a national heritage site brimming with unique flora and fauna – for a week in September all guests to our national parks have free entry. With the warmer weather, this is an ideal time to get up close to the majestic whales that grace the Cape shores at this time of the year. The Waterfront Boat Company offers amazing whale watching excursions, find out more details in our group highlights section.

In this issue we also report on our new relationship with Breakaway Travel in Hong Kong, an outcome of the Thebe Tourism Inbound team’s exceptional efforts at strengthening our presence Asia; cause for celebration indeed, given the growth of arrivals from this region.

Don’t miss the interesting story on First Car’s involvement with an exceptional social responsibility programme called Teachers Without Borders, an initiative to provide teachers in South Africa with professional development opportunities and tools that empower them to play a more vital role in their communities.

Until next month!

Thebe Tourism Inbound strengthens its Asian presence

Thebe Tourism Inbound (TTI) has recently formed a joint venture with a Hong Kong based outbound operator Breakaway Travel. The joint venture sees Breakaway Travel appointed General Sales Agent for TTI, as part of the groups refocused business strategy. The group has also employed a representative, Sophie Wong, based in Hong Kong.

This joint venture positions TTI’s Inbound operator UTc Asia strategically, as it reinforces its leadership position in the Chinese market,

which it has serviced in the last 6 years through organised pre-sold tour groups as well as ad hoc group and FIT tours.

“It’s been a difficult couple of years for the global tourism industry, which saw a drop in local and international tourist visits. However, there are signs that the industry’s woes, which were exacerbated by the global financial crisis, may be on the verge of turning around, powered by an increase in tourists from emerging markets like China. Tourism packages offered through this joint venture will be extended across the board, from three-star to top-of-the-range offerings for groups and FIT’s,” Says Heather Gutierrez Head of Thebe Tourism Inbound. The joint venture with Breakaway Travel was made possible because of the long standing relationship of the owner KP Chang with Thebe Tourism Group CEO, Monwabisi Fandeso

The Waterfront Boat Company offers a 4 hour boat trip onboard the Condor, a 61ft Motor Cruiser with a large top deck, which makes it perfect for whale watching. The Condor is also wheelchair friendly. The Waterfront Boat Company has qualified whale guides aboard who have in-depth knowledge of the marine environment.

TTI takes a stand in combating child exploitation

The Thebe Tourism Inbound recognises that the age of responsible tourism has arrived and to this end has recently signed the Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism.

The Fight Child Exploitation in Tourism initiative launched in South Africa by Fair Trade in Tourism aims to combat and prevent commercial sexual exploitation of children in South Africa’s tourism and travel industry.

The drive to combat child-sex tourism is an international movement championed by the likes of ECPAT International and funded by UNICEF the UNWTO. The movement is founded on the tenet that those working within the tourism industry have unique possibilities to observe, increase awareness of and report on the commercial sexual exploitation of children. In signing the code, Thebe Inbound joins several other reputable tourism and hospitality companies both locally and abroad.

Cape Point woman’s day competition winner

A Woman’s Day competition was run by the Cape Point Partnership and the prize was a fun filled day at Cape Point for the winner and three of her friends. Erin Carstens was ecstatic when she was announced as the winner, on the 4th of August.

Although Woman’s Day started a little gloomy with overcast skies, the wet and windy weather couldn’t dampen the excitement of Erin and her three friends, as the limousine made its way through the picturesque False Bay towns towards Cape Point

Fortunately blue skies met the group as they reached the Cape of Good Hope and they took full advantage of the break in the weather to take in the spectacular views.

The group of lucky ladies started their visit to Cape Point with a gourmet lunch at the Two Oceans Restaurant. After a glass of bubbly and admiring the breathtaking views from the restaurant’s deck, the group was served the sumptuous Two Oceans signature dish consisting of crayfish, queen prawns, calamari, shelled mussels, fresh fish fillets served with a Cape Seafood Curry. This dish has been featured on the Travel Channel by BBC series presenter, Henry Cole.

Erin and her friends ended the day by doing what women do best, shop! Each worked hard at spending their R500 voucher on anything from sunglasses and clothing to chic African décor at the Logo Store, the Parks Shop and Lighthouse 5, located at Cape Point
