CEO's Message

Some of South Africa’s best tourism products were showcased at the annual Tourism Indaba in Durban this past weekend. Indaba is Africa’s biggest tourism marketing event and attracts regional and international visitors, along with media from across the world. During Indaba’s opening ceremony, Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk stated that the National Tourism Sector Strategy targets were only possible if all stakeholders in the tourism industry worked together. The 2020 targets include increasing the number of foreign tourist arrivals to 15 million, increasing tourism’s contribution to the GDP to R499 billion and creating 225 000 new tourism jobs.

Another noteworthy development flowing from the Indaba briefings is the focus of South African Tourism (SAT) on growing tourism from the African continent. Four key markets have been identified by SAT - Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Nigeria, which will be targeted with a R60 million campaign. There is also an increased focus on the growth of domestic tourism by SAT.

In light of the targets set by the National Tourism Strategy, it is indeed welcome news to learn that TripAdvisor, Travelers' Choice® Destinations awards chose Cape Town as the best destination in the world; beating popular destinations such as Sydney, Machu Picchu and New York. TripAdvisor is the world’s largest travel review site with more than 20 million members and over 45 million reviews and opinions. These annual awards honour 337 global destinations and the winners are determined based on a combination of travelers' reviews and overall destination popularity. Cape Town was also voted as the best destination in Africa, ahead of Morocco, Egypt and the Seychelles. With Cape Town now being serviced by direct flights from the USA, South America, Europe and the Middle East, the city is leading the way in chasing the country’s tourism objectives for 2020.

Also at Indaba, we welcomed the announcement that Heather Gutierrez, the head of Thebe Tourism Inbound, has been re-elected president of the Southern Africa Tourism Association (SATSA) for another 2 year term; we wish Heather well with her tenure.

Editor's Note

Fresh from INDABA and bursting with pride over South Africa’s world class tourist offering I am very happy to present you with this month’s Thebe bulletin.

We at TTG are excited about the opening of the first Inglot cosmetics store in Sandton City, Johannesburg. This global brand has a very unique feature called the Freedom System which allows you to create your own colour palette. “Flagship Inglot Cosmetics store for Sandton” has more information on the launch.

Keeping it glamorous is the new Black Glamour lifestyle expo presented by TEPG in October 2011. Read more about it in “New expo for the glamorous and aspirational” and diarise the event now as you don’t want to miss the exciting lineup.

The Cape Town Big 6 blogger, Janine Nel, has been very busy visiting the 6 iconic Cape Town attractions. Read her latest review of Cape Point at the Cape of Good Hope, in which TTG is a concessionaire. The Cape Town Big 6 is a marketing collaboration between the ‘must see’ destinations in Cape Town - the V&A Waterfront, Table Mountain Cableway, Robben Island, Constantia Valley and Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden.

Hope you enjoy this month’s bulletin and remember that we’d like to hear from you so please send your feedback to
marketing@thebetourism.co.za.

Until next month!

Flagship Inglot Cosmetics store for Sandton

A new Inglot cosmetics store is due to open in the chic Sandton City Mall on the 27th of May 2011. Described as a flagship store, the 80m² Sandton City store will feature the same slick design that has become a trademark of the brand. The store will be located on the Lower Level of Sandton City and staffed by 7 make-up artists.

According to Kamnandi Retail, who brought Inglot cosmetics to South Africa, Sandton City was an obvious choice for the second Inglot store with an average of approximately 2.25 mil monthly visitors, most of who fall into a high income bracket.

This exciting cosmetic brand, established over 25 years ago is based in Poland and was launched in South Africa by Kamnandi Retail in November 2010. The first South African store was opened on the 27th of November in Cape Town’s popular Canal Walk shopping centre. Inglot is now represented in over 240 locations worldwide, including the fashion capitals of New York, London and Milan.

The Inglot range not only represents the latest trends in colour but also innovative products and a unique Freedom System which allows customers to create their own customised colour palette for lips and eyes.

Kamnandi Retail (Pty) Ltd was formed in 2002 in partnership with Quinmatro Retail, the Southern African licensee of Accessorize London. Health & safety of key importance to Compass Group SA

Best practice in health, safety and environmental awareness (HSE) has earned catering unit KKS, a division of Compass Group SA, the accolade of Best Performed Unit for the second year running. The award, sponsored by holding company Compass Group Southern Africa (Compass Group SA), recognises KKS as the group’s top HSE performer among its 450 country-wide catering units. Based at the Midrand Woolworths Distribution Centre in Johannesburg, KKS is a catering division of Compass Group SA, the country’s largest food-services company.

Compass Group SA lays great stress on the importance of HSE practices – to the extent that it has instituted international health and safety best practice at all its catering divisions.

The KKS catering unit achieved an overall score of 99,7%, an improvement on last year’s 99%.

Hanrie Oelofse, KKS Woolworths Distribution centre project manager, says: “At last year’s awards ceremony, we promised to maintain our high health and safety practices and I am proud of my team for keeping that promise. When one serves 75 000 meals a month and works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, like we do, there is no room for mistakes.”

Riëtte Venter, Compass Group SA’s Director of HSE, emphasises that the group follows a strict and integrated HSE risk management system that is endorsed by legal compliance, ISO standards and industry best practice
