CEO's Message

Our chairman recently reminded us of the miracle of South Africa and what a privilege it is to live in a country where a peaceful transition to democracy was achieved. We should therefore always be mindful of the huge debt that is due to all those who ensured that no blood was shed during this transition.

No person is owed a bigger debt than Mr Nelson Mandela, whose courage and determination to create a united South Africa inspired the nation. When South Africa hosted the Rugby World Cup in 1995 Mr Mandela saw an opportunity to bring this vision to life. The 2009 sports drama Invictus tells this story and how Mr Mandela used rugby as a vehicle to successfully unite all South Africans.

With South Africa once again gripped by Rugby World Cup fever one is reminded of the Springboks’ 2005 campaign and how their team work and the nation’s support carried them to victory.

Powerful analogies for business can be drawn from that event and the game of rugby, in general. In rugby, same as in business, a team can only triumph over its opposition by working together, supporting each other and with the entire team working towards a common goal - teamwork is critical and so is team-spirit.

This analogy can be applied to TTG which is going through its own version of the World Cup where success cannot be achieved without employees’ positive attitude and team work.

To close off I’d like to remind my colleagues in the industry is that our job in tourism is to bring the world to our shores and to share the miracle of what we achieved. Through tourism we have the opportunity to make a difference by creating jobs, and meeting the skills need.

We need to start each day with a moment of gratitude and a desire to make a difference. Every day should be a Madiba day.

Interim CEO, Thebe Tourism Group

Editor's Note

We kick this month’s bulletin off with an introduction to Andre Bouwer, newly appointed CEO of FX Africa. In the Q&A he discusses his future vision for the company and how he plans to steer the company through the current tough economical times.

This bulletin is also filled with lots of news and events from our subsidiaries and partners: First Car Rental is always one step ahead of the pack as the article “World’s first ‘green’ mobile checkout for First Car” illustrates; A group of Compass Group SA’s chefs make it to the finals of a prestigious national competition and in “Club Travel does it again” we celebrate the company’s recent victory at the World Travel Awards.

Until next month!

Q&A with Andre Bouwer, CEO of FX Africa

What sets FXA apart from its competitors
We are set apart from our competitors ultimately by what our customers experience and how well we perform. This will be the result of competencies and capabilities effectively leveraged from both our shareholders. The Thebe Tourism Group is a truly empowered South African company with extensive networks in the South African market, whilst Travelex is the biggest and most dominant global foreign exchange player. I believe that the replication of their processes and operating models into that of FXA, will contribute to setting us apart from our competition by offering customers superior offerings and convenience.

What is the relationship with Travelex
Travelex will become a 49% shareholder, with 51% held by TTG, and will bring their global knowledge and expertise to FXA. For example, FXA is busy scoping out a change program that will leverage the Travelex point of sales system and their internal processes and procedures as well. At an operational level, we could in future be viewed as a franchise of Travelex.

Will there be any rebranding to go hand-in-hand with the new shareholder agreement
We will be operating under a brand-license agreement. We are however already using the Travelex brand extensively in our stores, due to the existing franchise agreement. We need to leverage on the global Travelex brand that will be recognised by the foreign visitor, whilst continuing to build the brand in our local market.

What is your future vision for FXA
I see FXA as the number one Authorised Dealer with Limited Authority within the next 3 years by exceeding the expectations of our stakeholders including our shareholder, our customers and also our staff

World’s first ‘green’ mobile checkout for First Car

First Car Rental’s latest industry-leading check-out solution was recently launched at the Cape Town International Airport branch. What is believed to be the world’s first mobile checkout facility has been created for First Car Rental’s corporate customer base. The corporate loyalty tier is called “Show & Go” which is exactly what First Car Rental’s corporates do in a seamless, 100% paperless process.

The mobile checkout facility involves a handheld mobile checkout device which allows First Car Rental’s

corporate customers to checkout in 3.5 minutes without having to go into a branch, avoids time-consuming paperwork and doesn’t require any signatures.

Says Melissa Storey, Executive Head: Strategy, Development & Marketing at First Car Rental, “We are very proud of this achievement as ultimately our business is incredibly customer-centric, plus in this day and age it is smart to simultaneously improve processes that are also ‘green’. This mobile checkout facility is designed to save our corporate customers effort and time, which as we all know, when you travel a lot, as this market sector does, is invaluable.”
