CEO's Message

The past year brought with it a few challenges and many accomplishments for the Thebe Tourism Group, accomplishments that have only been possible as a result of dedicated and tenacious teams across the group. I would like to express my heartfelt respect and gratitude to all the people who ensured that the ship stayed on course despite the often choppy seas that we had to navigate. Our business is about people, it’s about the people we serve and our greatest business assets – our teams.

The new year brings with it opportunities to build on the achievements of the past year, with excellent leadership and devoted teams now in place in all our subsidiaries, our goals are much bigger and bolder, bolstered by the confidence that we have the right people leading the right people towards their execution. Over and above the imperative for sustainable financial growth, this year I would like to see a focus on development across the Group – development of small enterprises aligned to our businesses and development of human capital. At Thebe we are guided by the ethos ‘to lift as we rise’, therefore the investment in the development of others is not merely a tick box marking exercise – it is the very essence of our being, the reason for our existence.

It is also critical that we use this year to identify and exploit the synergies between the companies in the group more. Synergy is about being a team, it’s about reaping the benefits of being part of a larger group. For us to gain maximum benefit from being a part of a greater whole, it is key that the commitment to driving collaboration cascades to all levels of the organization – each and every employee should have a commitment to finding ways and means of working with their sister companies for their mutual benefit. As Henry Ford once said “Coming together is a beginning.Keeping together is progress.Working together is success.”

My wish for each person in our group is to take on a new approach in your daily work and see how you can make a difference; together we can expect great things from Thebe Tourism Group this year.

Marilyn Lewis
Interim CEO, Thebe Tourism Group

Editor's Note

Though we are still in the beginning of this year, exciting things are happening within our group already with all the exhilarating new expo’s planned by TEPG as well as Compass SA landing Sun City’s staff meals food service contract.

Thebe Tourism Group Retail Division has seen some thrilling changes and new developments over the last few months, the featured Q&A with newly appointed CEO Makhosi Khubeka, sheds some light and inside information on their undertakings.

We learn more about Harry Hawkins, General Manager at The Cape Point Partnership in our employee profile.

While this is also the month of love, I found TEPG’s involvement in the ‘barefoot no more’ project inspiring, and am excited to see what other subsidiaries in the group has planned for their ‘building our communities projects’ this year– something which is very important to the Thebe brand.

With the year ahead in clear view, it’s time to start setting goals for your next holiday, a reward to work towards in the coming months - Club Travel’s specials on destinations look particularly appealing in this respect.

Next month we will introduce a monthly 'trend watch' section highlighting interesting and new developments in the business world. Keep an eye out for this and send us your feedback on the articles.

Work hard this year, play hard, but mostly, do everything with passion!

Until next month!

Hapiloe Sello
Group GM: Marketing, Thebe Tourism Group

Q&A with Makhosi Kubheka

This month we interviewed Makhosi Kubheka, Managing Director of Thebe Tourism Retail Division, where she shares her insight on her role and expectations for this new division. She shares future plans for Thebe Tourism Retail Division and her recipe for success to a thriving retail business.

In this newly created position, how will you be adding value to the Thebe brand?
My contribution to the Thebe brand is about delivering on its brand promise of being a community focused organisation. This we will do by using our stores as a platform for previously disadvantaged communities to sell and showcase their wares we are constantly on the lookout for talented crafters and designers to supply our stores with authentic African artefacts.

Could you elaborate on fair trade within Thebe Tourism Group Retail Division?
The age of ethical consumerism and procurement is upon us and we at TTGR go out of our way to support fair trade by ensuring that the products within our stores are sourced from marginalised communities in the most direct route possible, thereby ensuring that these producers build sustainable enterprises and livelihoods and contribute to the betterment of their communities. The craft industry in particular is where I believe we can have the most impact because it has massive potential for job creation and labour absorption; it is an entry point into the formal economy for those less skilled.

How do you differentiate a store such as the Taung Trading Post, which sells SA memorabilia & crafts, from its many competitors?
Our point of differentiation is the unique customer experience in our stores; we enhance our shoppers’ experience by ensuring excellent customer service, convenient locations and exciting brands; combined, I believe we have a winning combination which makes us stand out amongst the ‘typical tourist’ shops.

What, in your opinion, is the key to a successful retail business?
Location, location, location! Where you are positioned is key in the retail business – it is crucial that your target market is within immediate reach. Following that, it is of extreme importance that you captivate your target market’s attention once they are in the store with what you have to offer.

How important is customer service for an airport store that serve a largely transient customer base?
It is of the utmost importance, it is after all, the basis from which you get repeat business, research has shown that a majority of travellers are repeat travellers, so making them repeat shoppers is critical to our success. To achieve this, our customer service has to be not only a grade better than the next shop, but should as well, be within international standards in recognition of the diversity of customer to
